Holly is one of the most recognizable Christmas decorations and this flowering plant looks simply gorgeous on Christmas and winter wreaths. The characteristic bright red berries are amazing while the typical sharp and shapely leaves contrast nicely and form the traditional seasonal color combo of red and green.

Holly wreaths usually have a circular garland made from the holly leaves, with berries placed on top. They often feature other decorative items too like pinecones, bells, snowflakes, ribbon, and other greenery. If you prefer a more traditional Christmas wreath, a holly wreath is an excellent option.

When you think of traditional plants during the winter period and festive holidays, most people think of holly. Holly is a flowering plant that typically blooms in the winter and perseveres through the harsh temperatures and cold weather.

Holly bushes and garlands have gorgeous dark green leaves that unfold into unusual shapes. These are complemented and contrasted by the iconic red berries that birds use as a vital food source when everything else is withering and dying during the winter.

Holly wreaths look fantastic and they are they ideal choice if you want something more traditional. They are available in various designs but typically include a circular garland of holly leaves dotted with the gorgeous red berries. You may also find other seasonal items like pinecones.

The red and green colour combination looks superb and many holly wreaths have more fun aspects too like red, silver, or gold baubles, and decorative ribbons. The combinations are endless and no matter what style of wreath you prefer, there is a holly wreath for you.

We have some stunning holly wreaths available for the winter and all the necessary accessories like wreath hangers so you can spruce up your home during the festive season.

How do you care for your holly wreath?

Like any cut flowers, cut holly leaves will last for much longer if the stems are watered. As a result, you should spray fresh water on the stems using a water spray bottle. It’s also best practice to keep the wreath in a cool area if possible and protect it from direct sunlight.

You should mist the wreath with water every couple of days and trim any dead or wilting leaves and berries. Always hold the wreath gently and don’t be afraid to reposition the garlands and decorations if needed to cover up patches where the leaves are dying.

What is the best way to hang your holly wreath?

There are several common ways to hang your holly wreath but I prefer using a wreath hanger. This is by far the most convenient option and it involves hanging one end of the accessory over your door, and the opposite hook is what you balance your wreath on.

The only downside is that there is a visible strip of either metal or plastic hanging down from your door. If you don’t want this, I advise using command strips or magnetic wreath hooks instead. These are also easy to use and are invisible once your wreath is hung.

Is an artificial holly wreath better than a real one?

Real holly wreaths just have that certain magical air about them and they do have a nice scent too. The real berries of course look amazing too. The drawback is that they don’t last as long and you do need to water them every couple of days to keep the greenery looking fresh.

Artificial wreaths can look great too and although they can’t match the authenticity of a real wreath, they make a convincing alternative. These wreaths also last indefinitely, and don’t require any maintenance so they are ideal if you want a no-fuss option.

What is the best size for your holly wreath?

This depends on where you want to use it! If it is serving as a centrepiece together with candles on your table for Christmas dinner, just measure the spot you intend to place it and make sure you have enough room for plates and serving dishes.

If you want your holly wreath as a welcoming decoration on your door, measure the width of the door first not including the frame. You should then subtract at least 5 inches from this width (no more than 10) to get the ideal holly wreath size.
